For week 18 the kids made Native American paper baskets out of newspaper. They folded sheets of newspaper to create strips (they glued the long edges together) and then weaved the paper to create a basket. They ended up taping several strips together to get the sides of the basket to go all the way around. Speedy painted his and Goosey left hers as is.
WOW! Christmas and New Years has gone as fast as it has come! I haven't updated the blog in awhile so I thought I would catch up today! We finished wrapping up week 18 of TOG the week before Christmas and are taking a break from school until next week. We also tried our hand at candle dipping and it was a lot of fun! I had always heard that they were difficult to make but we didn't think so. It was time consuming but not very hard. We picked up a kit from a used curriculum fair last summer and it had all the supplies we needed so we were good to go! The kids had a lot of fun making them and are ready to buy more supplies to make more!

We have been learning more about the Victorian time period through these past few weeks so it has been a lot of fun especially being able to tie some things into Christmas time. We've been working on A Victorian Christmas with the crafts, projects, recipes, movies, and readings that we've been doing. The kids are starting to get things wrapped up for our Victorian Christmas party that we'll be having this week!
In addition to all our studies, we were able to tour a recreation of a Victorian Village! It was neat to see all the buildings that comprised the village and to learn about their different crafts and trades. At one point we were in a ribbon/fabric shop which reminded me of the movie Little Women! A friend of ours also happened to come across this amazing Edwardian online Christmas Advent calendar! I decided to go ahead and purchase it since it closely fits in with our Victorian studies! So far it is pretty neat! The only complaint I have is that I wish there were more interactive activities (there are some but so far it seems to be 1 per every 3-4 video scenes). We are enjoying it though and can't wait to see what they have available next year as their advent calendar! Christmas is fast approaching this year! I think that extra week that we are lacking this year between Thanksgiving and Christmas is throwing me for a loop (or maybe its this virus/cold/flu thing that has suddenly decided to take me over)!! We have managed to stay on task, somewhat, with school! Although I really think next year we will start a little earlier and take the month of Dec off! We just finished up week 17 of Tapestry of Grace (YAY) and have this week left before we break for Christmas! Although the guide suggests a pioneer, chuck wagon type of party, we are opting for a Victorian Christmas! :o) Speedy is in charge of cooking and recipes-he tested some out during Thanksgiving and made an AWESOME, definately to be repeated, Yule Log cake!! I am looking forward to eating that!! And Goosey is in charge of decorating! Rosey said she will come as a guest to the party! I will post an update when we have our Victorian Party! Rosey has finished CC for the semster. Her final project was a cost of living portfolio and a Shakespeare project which she had a FUN time doing!! She has told me tidbits about Shakespeare that I never knew like he invented some phrases and words that we still use today!! For the last 2 weeks of TOG, it has been mostly reading. We have covered the pioneers before in the past so my kids have already done many of the projects and crafts. My aunt however did find this AWESOME wood wagon model that she had aquired many years ago so Goosey decided to take on the challenge and build it! I say take on the challenge because the model says easy to assemble and it was anything but easy! She did manage to finish it and it looks really good! The packaging did say that you can convert the model into a lamp stand by adding electrics to it and she said she wanted to do that so that may be her next project!
We watched the 50th special of Doctor Who and then had a Doctor Who theme party complete with food and decorations! We had sonic pretzels, adipose marshmellows, fish fingers and custard, bananas, tea, home made jammie dodgers, and bow tie pasta dyed red!
Goosey painted an exploding Tardis. Today the kids made Physic Paper which proved to be a challenge since several types of glue were not sticking to the leather type fabric we had. They did make it work though by using a combination of foam glue and felt glue but it definately was a challenge! We made a paper Tardis which we printed from here. We didn't have any cardstock so the kids just glued the whole page onto a file folder after we printed it out. Then we made bow ties because bow ties are cool! Our last project for the week was pom pom Adipose.
And so it begins....we are all big Doctor Who fans over here so we have begun our own Doctor Who 50th Anniversary countdown week!! Since Sun, we have made Fezes, well because fezes are cool. We made them by sewing plastic canvas together and glued a velvety type of material onto it. A fob watch which were parts we pieced together from craft store/beading supplies. The kids also made sonic screwdriver pens by molding clay onto the outside of a pen. River Song Journals were made out of a regular notebook (the kids cut and glued cardboard windows to create the 3D effect before painting the whole journal Tardis blue). Goosey is starting to work on decorations for the party so she painted a Bad Wolf sign. And finally, my project was sewing the kids a Dalek bag so they have a place to put everything they'll be making throughout the week until the actual party that we are hoping to have when we watch the 50th anniversary. The Dalek bag was just sewed together and Goosey made the whisk and plunger out of fabric and attached it to her bag.
We completed week 13 last week of TOG and begun our Victorian Era. We plan on having a Victorian Christmas party at the end of the unit. For now we are just cruising along with the readings from TOG and I have been adding extra Victorian Era stuff. We have been making crafts and working on projects using A Victorian Christmas. Goosey made Jam Biscuits using the recipe from Samantha, the American Girl Doll Cook Book.
For our Halloween festivities, we started the day with school (much to my kids dismay), but we had fun learning about Denmark, specifically Legos! :o) Goosey did manage to carve her pumpkin the other day and she decided to create a kittens in a basket display! Our pets decided to dress up for Halloween today! Now that school is done for the day we plan on having a movie marathon with some Halloween movies!! We plan on watching Hotel Transylvania, Good Witch, Haunted Mansion, and some Twilight Zones in addition to enjoying some popcorn and candy! Have a safe and Happy Halloween!
For our country study we traveled to Denmark with Map Travelers! We learned that Legos originated there and since we are huge fans of Lego, that's where most of our study was concentrated at! We watched this neat video on Legos... We explored the history of Legos on the Lego website here. While we were learning about Denmark, Goosey decided to create a Halloween scene with Legos since today is Halloween!
We began week 10 this week of TOG after taking a week off. This week we did some pioneer crafts. Goosey made a braided rug to put in our kitchen. She tore some rags we had into strips and then braided them. Once braided, she wove them through some yarn and then tied the ends together. Speedy has begun reading David Copperfield as we enter into Victorian England in the next few weeks while Rosey is working on a Shakespeare project for CC.
