So far she's built a catapult which the cat was having fun chasing all the little marbles that were being shot out of it and a board to measure the height. Her experiment was to shoot the marble out of the catapult at different angles and see where it landed on the measuring board.
Everyone has been working away at their science. Speedy is almost done with his Apologia Biology book, Rosey has a science research paper for CC and she has chosen aromatherapy as her topic so she has been busy researching for that. And Goosey is continuing with the Physics set. So far she's built a catapult which the cat was having fun chasing all the little marbles that were being shot out of it and a board to measure the height. Her experiment was to shoot the marble out of the catapult at different angles and see where it landed on the measuring board. The next big project was to make a pulley.

Goosey finished up her Apologia Exploring Creation with Chemistry and Physics book in Dec. so I wanted to keep the momentum going! I found this awesome Thames and Kosmos Physics Workshop kit last summer at a used curriculum sale so she is continuing the rest of the year with that! So far this week she did an experiment on finding balance, made a contraption to spear a potato, and then she built a car which she had a lot of fun with! The kit consists of a booklet and parts/pieces to build things. She reads a section of the booklet, then completes the experiments by building and carrying out an experiment with what she built, and finally it has a short explanation on what is happening. So far it is going very well!
Moving right along in science, Goosey had an experiment this week making something similar to this Elephant's Toothpaste. She experimented a little further and added food coloring as foam was coming out and she created this rainbow concoction!
Speedy has been anxiously awaiting experiments in his biology book and they are finally getting started! This week he needed to collect pond water from our pond and view the critters under a microscope. They have been very fascinating to see! Goosey has started her science book and has been working on those experiments. One was on the density of water. She was able to separate the different colors because they had different amounts of salt in them. Second experiment was to mix different types of liquids of different density and then drop items into the container and see where they stopped. Here is an extremely similar experiment (I think only a couple of different ingredients were used in the one we did). And the favorite experiment was the lava lamp! Here's instructions on how to make your own! We used the generic tablets of alka seltzer and I bought a big box of them!
We are in our summer schedule and have been busy with camps lately! One more week of camps left! In the meantime, the kids have been making a summer fun list of ideas and we have done some of them. I have even created one myself of the many things I have always wanted to do but have never made the time for and it has been fun!
Goosey made some glow in the dark slime by mixing a little more than 1/2 container of white glue (elmers) and 1/2 cup water in a container. In a separate container mix 1/3 cup water with 2 tsp of Borax (you can find this in the laundry section of your store and it will usually be in a big box). *You won't be using all the borax mix.* Add a little spoon at a time of the borax mix to your glue/water mix until you have the consistency that you want (either thick or runny). Then add your glow in the dark paint. Voila, you have glow in the dark slime! We are in week 29 of TOG and need to play catch up as we had a busy week! For this week the kids have been mainly working on their readings. Goosey has been continuing with her Ben Franklin experiments. She tried one with static electricity again but it didn't quite work the way it was supposed to. She needed to cut paper moths out of tissue paper and place those in a plastic box with a lid. Then she was to rub the top with a piece of wool and the moths were supposed to move. We did get close to the results but not quite like she expected. After she rubbed the box with the wool, she flipped the box over and then flipped it again, that is when the moths stuck to the lid because of the static.
For science and for our group 4H project, the kids are making a pizza garden! Our plan is to grow basil, oregano, onions, tomatoes, wheat, and garlic so that at the end of our 4H year in a few months we will be making pizzas with the ingredients that we grow! This week we had each family plant all the ingredients and take them home to take care of until we can transfer them into the greenhouse. We brought ours home and Goosey made some signs to go along with them and will be monitoring them as they grow as a science project. We had a science week this week! Rosey just completed her science fair with CC. She did her board and experiment on learning styles and if people tend to favor just one or more styles. Her conclusion was that most people favor 2 which was different than her hypothesis. For the actual science fair she placed 3rd out of about 15 kids-yay!! :o) Speedy worked on his experiments from Apologia's Physical Science involving eggs! The experiments were to see the differences between speed and velocity.
