We ended our study with a camp fire and roasted hot dogs on it! I had planned for Goosey to build a tent as a hooverville but we did not get to that. Maybe an indoor one!
We've been learning a lot about the Great Depression and have just finished up that time period! We have been enjoying Clara's Depression cooking! Her youtube videos are here. We've also been using her cookbook, Clara's Kitchen as a reference. Goosey has been reading through it as she gives tid-bits of what her life was like during the Great Depression and she's been making some recipes from it as well (so far she has made biscotti, bread, and custard). I love how Clara gives insight on what it was like growing up in the Great Depression! We've also watched a movie about the Great Depression...Kit Kitteridge. The kids have been reading a lot of books to go along with the topic! We ended our study with a camp fire and roasted hot dogs on it! I had planned for Goosey to build a tent as a hooverville but we did not get to that. Maybe an indoor one! The above post contains affiliate links. See my discloser policy for more info

I was exploring some websites over the weekend for Christmas present ideas for the kids and came across an AMAZING site for American Girl Dolls! This family has made many accessories for their dolls! When I showed Goosey the site, she immediately said she wanted to make the fire place for our cats and thus began our fireplace building adventure!!
Luckily we had many wood scraps in the garage from previous woodworking projects that we have worked on so we were able to salvage what we had and the best part-a lot of the pieces were already cut close to the size we needed which meant less sawing-YAY!!. We followed the plans from the site but the only thing different is that goosey wanted to place the fireplace over our heating vent so she made the sides wider to fit over the vent (the base of the fireplace rests in front of the vent and the sides stretch beyond the base). She mostly did everything herself with my supervision. Once she had the whole thing assembled, she painted it and then sponged on paint to look like brick. Then she placed it over the vent and added a black poster board to create the back, sticks, tissue paper, and battery operated tea lights so when the heat turns on, the tissue paper begins to move and with the tea lights, it looks like the fire is flickering! So I can now officially say our cats are pretty spoiled considering they have a fire place and we don't! We're looking forward to placing their stockings on the mantel this year for Christmas! |
