Speedy has been anxiously awaiting experiments in his biology book and they are finally getting started! This week he needed to collect pond water from our pond and view the critters under a microscope. They have been very fascinating to see! Goosey has started her science book and has been working on those experiments. One was on the density of water. She was able to separate the different colors because they had different amounts of salt in them. Second experiment was to mix different types of liquids of different density and then drop items into the container and see where they stopped. Here is an extremely similar experiment (I think only a couple of different ingredients were used in the one we did). And the favorite experiment was the lava lamp! Here's instructions on how to make your own! We used the generic tablets of alka seltzer and I bought a big box of them!

We have some pear trees in our yard and this year they have produced many pears! We just finished picking them and are sampling the many different things we can make with pears!! We have canned pears which are DELICIOUS!! We used this recipe here. We have already canned about 10 big jars and still have buckets of pears left over!! We plan on doing more canning in the next week or so as the rest of the harvest ripens! We tried pear crisps today as well and they came out very good! I think the next time we make these though, I'll use a little less brown sugar in the mix as we had a lot of the topping . We used this recipe to make it.
We are on week 2 of TOG and are starting to get into the swing of things! We have been watching John Adams the mini series which has been very interesting! I would recommend it to older kids as there are a few graphic scenes of surgery and tarring which we all gladly agreed to fast forward past (a little too much information displayed there). Speedy has been enjoying it and Goosey has lost interest in it so she has been watching it on and off while doing something else. One of the assignments for Goosey in TOG for the week was to create something from France since they are learning about Napoleon so she decided to make a model of the Eiffel Tower out of paper mache. She first created a base with marker, cardboard, and toliet paper tubes and then covered it in paper mache and then spray painted the tower. Rosey started CC this week and is back into the school routine! She was excited to see her friends from there and also to meet her new teacher for Challenge 1! She is excited to start her Shakespeare project from there! For Geography we "travelled" to Germany via Map Travelers to finish up where we left off in the spring. We sampled many different chocolate treats from there-yum!! Then we went to Italy! Goosey made a model of the colosseum with some left over building bricks we had. We are going to attempt to make Gelato tomorrow-yum! :o)
Well summer has most certainly zipped by this year! The kids had their 4H fair and did very well! They all ended up with state ribbons so off we went to the state fair!
We started back to school a tad early this year so we could break in time for Christmas. We started off getting over poison ivy and colds (yes colds this early in the season!! I think we were running a little ragged from our busy-ness this past month). I usually make a very nice back to school cake but this year it snuck up on us way too fast so we opted for flavor rather than looks and made Ghirardelli brownies-yum!! :o) Our first few days of school were nothing too eventful, just getting back into the routine of things and starting up new curriculums and new subjects. If you started up with school again, hopefully you are having a great week and if not, hopefully you are gearing up for a great first week! :o) |
